Markel Insurance Company has an in-house Claims department that is committed to providing high quality claims handling through the fair and timely resolution of claims asserted by policyholders and third party claimants associated with the insurance policies we service. We will settle or defend in accordance with sound claims handling practices and in compliance with legal and ethical responsibilities created by the regulatory bodies in the states where we do business.
Reporting Mortality Claims
You must notify us immediately when all accidents or injuries occur.
You can report a Mortality claim 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.

Animal Loss Procedures
DO
- Report the loss immediately.
- Make arrangements for an autopsy.
- Call the Police in case of theft, shooting, or vehicular involvement.
DON’T
- Have the animal put down without consent of Markel Insurance Company.
- Have the animal removed before the autopsy is performed.
- Neglect to file a police report if needed.
Surgery Procedures
- Permission must be granted for all surgeries.
- On animals with surgical insurance, please follow-up with a properly completed equine surgery claim report form and attach all bills, paid or unpaid.
CAUTION: Please call these procedures to the attention of anyone having care, custody and control of the insured animal. Failure to comply can void your loss or claim.

Accident Report Procedures
DO
- Obtain all accident details.
- Obtain names, addresses, and phone numbers of all witnesses.
- Obtain names, addresses, and phone numbers of police, fire, medical or hospital authorities.
- Call and report any incidents to Markel Insurance Company's Claims Department.
DON’T
- Divulge information to anyone regarding your insurance coverage.
- Admit responsibility for the accident or injury.
- Discuss the accident or injury with anyone other than your insurance representative or someone he authorizes.
